Hi Everyone!

Thanks for your interest in the NYU Badminton club. I have provided all the information you need below but in case you don't like reading or want to get it in person, there will be an informational meeting on Sunday, September 11 at 3:30pm in the Coles Conference room (top floor by the equipment room).  Reading this e-mail or attending the informational meeting and following the instructions in its entirety is a prerequisite for joining!

First some general info:

We are both a recreational club and competitive club.
LOCATION: Coles Sports Center in Fieldhouse Courts 1 and 2 (by the squash/racketball courts)
RACKET: You need your own racket to participate. Rackets can be purchased quite cheaply at Paragon Sports on 17th street and broadway. Alternatively, you can purchase a racket online at badmintonalley.com or san diego badminton supply.
SHUTTLES: We provide shuttles (which is what can really get expensive over time : )
DRESS CODE: please wear proper athletic attire. No jeans or sandals.
BACKPACKS/BOOK BAGS: No bags will be allowed on the courts because they are a safety hazard.  The NYU Coles Staff will take your bag to the lost and found if it is left on the side of the courts.  There are day lockers in the locker room and you can check out a lock from the equipment room with your NYU ID.
SAFETY: For your safety, please do not walk through the courts and be careful to watch the lines and not stand too close to the courts when you are not playing.

ABOUT RECREATION:
-we welcome members of all levels
-we have courts Fridays 7-10:30pm; Sunday 3-4:30pm (except September 18).
**It is recommended that beginner players show up at 7 and the advanced players show up for the later hours however there are no formal restrictions as to when you can come and how long you can stay for.
-There will be a sign-up board for 15 minute sessions, doubles only.  Your name can only be on the board once at a time and if you are playing, your name will be erased from all spots on the board.  Please remember to sign up again at the end of your 15 minutes! While you are waiting, you are welcome to practice on the adjacent basketball court (kept empty for us) or any empty racketball courts.  Generally the wait to get on a court is 15 minutes but it can be 30 minutes the first couple sessions.
-You can sign up for courts with your friends or we will try to pair you up with someone of a similar level. Just ask if you are shy! We are very friendly.
-It is generally very crowded the first couple months.  This dwindles quickly so don't despair if you are a serious badminton enthusiast!
-we offer informal group coaching for beginner and intermediate players on Sundays from 3-4:30pm.  please e-mail nyubadminton@gmail.com with the subject "coaching" and what you think your level is if you would like to participate in the message body.  This coaching is free courtesy of Fabrice Jaumont, a veteran team member and only those serious about committing to a weekly attendance should sign up.
-attendance: you are required to come at least twice a month.  you can show up late or leave early but all we ask is that you show up and check your name off on the attendance twice a month.

ABOUT TEAM:
-the team plays local schools in the area (Columbia, Princeton, Yale, UPenn, Drexel, Rutgers), usually 2-3 games per semester.
-mandatory practices on Sundays from 4:30-7pm.
-game dates for this semester are Oct 8 (home game) and Nov 12 (@ Princeton). please do not sign up if you will not be able to participate in the tournaments.  We are trying to schedule one more game for the fall. date tbd.  Transportation to games will be provided by NYU.
-tryouts will be Sunday, Sept 18 at 4:30pm.  If you plan to try out for the team, please do not show up to recreation on Friday, September 16, or if you do, show up after 9pm (I know some of you wanted to get some practice in before tryouts).  This is to keep the initial first day crowd manageable.  You may show up starting at 3pm on Sept 18 to warm up.
**Team tryouts format: we will first ask you to warm up and hit with a partner and make an initial cut based on our observation of how you play. We will then do some drills and have you play games against each other for the final cut. If you feel that you were cut and belong on the team, we will take challenges either at the end or the following week.
**If you were on the team before, you are still required to show up to tryouts to help with the tryouts. Your team status will not be in jeopardy.
-If you try out and do not make the team, you can still participate in recreation.  (you can even take advantage of the coaching sessions! Members who have received coaching have gone on to be part of the team)

HOW TO SIGN UP:
In order to participate this fall, EVERYONE (even if you were a member before) must fill out a club sports athlete information form located here: http://www.gonyuathletics.com/documents/2008/9/10/Athlete_Card.pdf?id=75
(Please copy and paste the link to the browser if it doesn't work).  Make sure the form includes your N#, netID, address, emergency contact, department/credits and signature.  Insufficient information will cause you to be rejected from the club.

Please write your preferred e-mail address somewhere visible on the form if you do not want your netID to be used. The deadline to turn in a form will be Friday SEPTEMBER 23, 2011. You can turn in the form in three ways:
1. badminton club mailbox in the Coles Staff Office
2. at the information session September 11, 3:30pm
3. During our first couple meetings. (Sept 16, 18, 23).

Electronic copies WILL NOT be accepted.

Other things to note:

NYU-Poly students are not allowed to participate in NYU Club sports at this time.  Unfortunately this is a rule made by those above me.  I know there are many of you and we hope to accommodate you in the future.

Please e-mail me at nyubadminton@gmail.com if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting you!
