Schedule reminder, late signups

Thanks to those who came out today to play tonight. Hopefully the wait wasn't too long for you all.

So for something not so sweet, I want to remind everyone that due to the large number of people signed up already, I am cutting off membership for now. Please do not bring your friends if they are not already signed up.If you have not given me a club sports information card, you are not yet an official member of this club. Next Friday I will have an attendance list. Please check your name on the list before you play; and YOU MUST BE ON THE LIST IN ORDER TO PLAY. Of course people rapidly decide they don't have time for badminton and stop showing up (this happens every year). I imagine I can open up membership in a month or so so those of you not signed up, just sit tight and you'll get to play later on this semester.

Lastly, a reminder that it will be team practice only on Sunday at 5pm. At 6:30 we will open up some limited courtspace for recreational club. This will likely be unmoderated. If you'd like to try out for the team, the format will be something as follows: you'll have a chance to warm up a bit. Then you can pick a player of your choice and we will observe how you hit and then make a decision on the spot. It will only take a few minutes. If you make the team, be prepared to do some rigorous exercise on Sunday. If not, I will try to leave a court open so that you don't have to go home immediately.

Okay, feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!

This week's schedule

Thanks to all who came out last Friday and Sunday. It was a pleasure to meet you and I hope you all had fun.  I know this is another long e-mail but please do your best to read it all!

 2. Update on the team/tryouts
 3. Recreational play guidelines

1. The schedule for this week will be as follows
 Friday 7-10:30pm: Recreational play.
–I will give a brief lesson on basic rules of the game around 7:30pm
 Sunday:
     4:45-6:30 Team practice only**
6:30-7:30: Team practice continues + Recreational play (limited courts)

---

2. **Thanks especially to all those who tried out for the team. It's really great to see so many people interested in serious badminton. Those that did not make the preliminary team have been signed up for the club and are very welcome to play recreationally to improve your game. We tried our best to do a quick yet thorough selection for the preliminary team. If you feel that you were missed and deserve to be on the team, you are welcome to come talk to me and make your case. We are very willing to give everyone a fair chance and will watch you play again. Due to limited time and space though, there will not be any game challenges for now. If you are new and would still like to try out for the team, please come on Sunday as well. The format of the tryout will be us watching how you hit with another player of your choice for a few minutes and then we will make a decision on the spot.

3.  A few ground rules for recreational play:
 a. Bookbags: Please leave your bookbags in the locker room. Locks may be checked out from the equipment room with your NYU ID card (as you enter Coles, it’s on your left at the top of the stairwell).

 b. Dress: Please wear proper athletic attire. This means NO JEANS, and NO FLIPFLOPS.

 c. Shuttles: There will be two plastic shuttles per court. Please leave the shuttles on the court when you are done playing. You are also free to use as many USED feather shuttles from the shuttle box as you want. If you’d like to play a serious game with new feather shuttles, please see me and I will give you one. This rule applies to EVERYONE.

 d. Time limit: Recreational play will be 15 minute sessions and there will be ONE sign up list. I or one of the club representatives will be in charge of the list. Put your name on the list when you arrive and remember to add your name to the list when you finish playing. I will try to group people according to your level of play. I will also try to accommodate special requests as efficiently as possible, so just let me know if you have any preferences (i.e. if you’ve played the same people already and don’t want to play them again, or you feel that your opponents are too good or not good enough, etc.). I know the wait is sometimes long and I do want you to have fun!

e. Respect your fellow club members. This means sit/stand off the court when you are not playing. Help watch out for stray volleyballs. Make friends!

---

 4. Finally, T-SHIRTS: You can view our t-shirt design on our webpage (www.nyubadminton.info). T-shirts will be $12. If you’d like a shirt, please give $12 to me or Katrin (exact change please!) in an envelope with your name on it or clipped with a paper with your name and size (S, M, L, XL).  You can find us at practice.
Deadline to purchase a t-shirt will be Sunday, Sept 28 at 7:30pm. The shirts are completely optional.

Okay, I think that’s everything for now. If you have any comments, questions, concerns, feel free to talk to me or e-mail me at nyubadminton@gmail.com

See you this weekend!

Upcoming Schedule

Thanks everyone for stopping by at our table at the clubfest. There's lots of information in this e-mail so please read carefully.  Returning members, the spiel is more or less the same as my welcome back e-mail, but please bear with me and you may find another surprise at the end. : )

here's the summary
1. About us
2. Schedule/Times
3. What you need to bring on your first day
4. Where to purchase a racket
5. How to unsubscribe from this mailing list
6. The surprise!!

1. About us:
We are both a recreational club and a team club. If you are interested in recreational play, there is no requirement to joining. All you need to do is bring your own racket. We will provide plastic shuttles, used feather shuttles for practice, and a limited number of feather shuttles for games. Feel free to provide your own shuttles as well. As a recreational player, you do not have to come to every practice. I can guarantee that you will be overwhelmed the first day by all the people showing interest, but if you really like badminton, keep coming back later on in the semester because others will decide they want to join other clubs or need to spend more time on school, etc.

The team is intermural and plays against schools in our area like Princeton, Columbia, Yale, and UPenn. We take about 10 guys and 10 girls. If you are interested in trying out for the team, you should have some experience playing badminton (like playing in a high school league). You must be able to come to most of our Sunday practices from 5-7:30 pm and be ready for some intense badminton training. You must be available on select weekend dates (current proposed away game dates are Oct 19 and Nov 9. Home game Dec 6) to represent the team against other schools. The away games usually take up the entire day, but there will be plenty of downtime to do homework or socialize : ) NYU provides funding for all the transportation.

2. Schedule and times
Our regular practice schedule will be:
Friday: 7-10:30pm
Sunday: 5-7:30pm
We play at Coles Sports Center in the Field House level (downstairs in the far end by the squash courts).  Coles is located on the corner of Bleecker and Mercer streets.

Our FIRST official weekend will begin Friday September 12. FOR THIS FIRST WEEKEND ONLY, this is the schedule:
-Friday September 12: Players that are interested in recreational play only. If you are interested in the team, do not come on Friday.
-Sunday September 14: Players that are interested in the team only. If you are only interested in playing recreationally, please come on Friday as all four courts this day will be used for team tryouts. If you are not sure, come on Friday and talk to me. I am still working on the format for the tryouts, but we will do our best to assess your level for the team likely by watching you play, hitting with you, having you play mini-games, and pairing you up with potential partners.

For FUTURE weeks, both days will be open to all club members, but two courts will be reserved on Sundays for team practice. If you do not make it on the team, you are of course welcome to play recreationally!

3. What you need to bring on your first day.
a. Your racket.
b. Shuttles if you have them. But we will provide plastic shuttles, used shuttles, and feather shuttles for games
c. A filled out club sports information card. EVERYONE (both recreational players and team must fill this out.) You can print one out by clicking on this link: http://www.nyubadminton.info/download/whitecard.pdf
Make sure you fill out the left hand side and the lower right, and sign. The NYU ID# should be the number on the back of your purple ID. Your e-mail address should be your netID@nyu.edu. Please put an asterick (*) next to your name if you are on the mailing list so I don't add you twice.

If you CANNOT make it to your designated first practice, please do not show up at the other one, especially the team tryout. Wait until the following Friday to join but please fill out a club sports information card and leave it in the badminton club mailbox in the Coles staff office (turn left after you pass through the security) by Sunday, September 14.

4. To purchase a racket
a. you can try Paragon sports on Broadway and 18th Street.
b. Alternatively, you can also contact NYC Badminton (www.nycbadminton.com). They sell licensed Yonex rackets at cheaper prices than most suppliers. You can e-mail or call them and arrange a pickup.
c. If you want to order online, I would recommend Badminton Alley (http://www.badmintonalley.com/) and San Diego Badminton Supply (http://www.badminton.net/cart/index.php).

5. FINALLY, for those of you that read through this, a reward! We will have badminton THIS Sunday, September 7 from 5-7:30pm. Bring your rackets and bring shuttles. I won't do any talking so it'll be 2.5 hours of free play! (I may mediate the courts if it gets busy). For those interested in the team, this will be a perfect chance to get back in the game. You can also bring in the club sports information card so you don't have to deal with the paperwork later on.

Thanks for reading. All this information will be located on our webpage at www.nyubadminton.info . I look forward to meeting you all! Please e-mail me if you have any questions at nyubadminton@gmail.com
