1. Deadline to join
Technically, the last day to join a club sport for the fall-2007 semester was this past Sunday. Since I forgot to send out a reminder, I will try to extend the deadline to this Friday, September 28. Please make sure you fill out a club sports athelete's information card and hand it to Emily Chan so you can be added to the club roster. According to club sports rules, we cannot let you play if you are not on our roster, and we will not be able to accept new members until the Spring semester.
2. Reminders
Again, please check your name off on the sign-in sheet posted on the squash court window before you start playing. I can remember some of your names and check you off, but I don’t want to have to call attendance at each practice. Signing in is really important because it tells Coles that we need more space/court time!
3. T shirts:
Deadline for ordering a t-shirt is this Friday. I will place the order this weekend. No money, no shirt. T shirt designs are here:
4. Court Times this week:
Due to a volleyball tournament, we have very much abbreviated setup times this week. Friday: 8-10:30 pm. Team will use one court for mixed games. There will be no setups on Sunday.
Please note, in the future on Sundays 5-6 pm, all four courts will be reserved for team practice. After that, all four courts will be open for free play. On Fridays, the team may need to make use of the first two courts for challenges and training, but I will do my best to keep all four courts open for free play. Please remember to use the sign up sheets to get on a court, cross your name off when you play and call up the next set of people when you’ve finished. I will have court usage guidelines on the sign-up sheets so let’s please remember to follow them. When all four courts are open, I recommend that the more advanced players sign up to play on the first two courts for more even games.
I have posted the current schedule for this semester and any cancellations I know of on our webpage here.
5. Team Practice and Coaching
The idea of team practice is to have some open time (somewhat moderated by me) for those interested in competing and improving their game to practice and drill without the pressure to play games given space constraints. During training, we will be doing racket drills, 2 on 1 practice, and a little bit of footwork and rotation style for the doubles. Each week there will be a specific agenda for the training session and different drill options depending on your skill level (You can decide what you need or I can help you decide). If there are any specific drills that you think would be particularly beneficial to the team, please let me know so that I can fit them in and get a good demo going.
Training is not mandatory but if you show up during team training time, training will be your only option. For now training is open to anyone on a ladder/interested in competing extramurally. Depending on how many people show up for this first training, I may have to set a quota based on the ladders.
Unfortunately, we were unable to sign-on any of the coaches we were hoping to get to help us train. I will continue to be in charge of most of the organizational and logistical aspects of the club/team. I will do my best to arrange training so that it can be as beneficial as possible for all. We have many experienced players on our team this year, so we should be able to help ourselves improve.
6. Endurance training
Anybody interested in endurance training? For those that are interested, we can try to do a group endurance training session before practice on Sundays from 4:10-4:50. Hopefully it doesn’t sound too scary, as this is meant to be fun and to get you energized for badminton. Either be in the field house or at the track on the roof, we will do stretches, running, lines, footwork, lunge things, etc. I will post a sign-up sheet on Friday and depending on the level of interest, we can start that before our next Sunday practice.
7. Team, ladders, games.
The singles and doubles ladders are set for now. I have posted them on our webpage here. Please let me know if I accidentally forgot about you. It will be updated throughout the year as challenges are made under “The Team”. We will work on the mixed ladder this Friday and also fit in those who are interested but not yet placed on the singles and doubles (including non-students).
If you are in the top 10 for singles or top 5 for doubles, please let me know if you can’t make any of the first three tournaments. The away games will all be day trips. We will leave 2 hours before the times given below and return in the evening. I will do challenges for the Yale game on Oct 12 and 14. I will send more information about the challenges later. For now I would focus on training and improvement and not worry about the ladder too much. Many of you had very close games and constantly challenging every week would not be productive.

8. Post practice hunger:
Usually a group of us get bubble tea or food after practice. If you do stick around until the end and would be getting food on your own otherwise, come find us. It’s a great way to socialize and get to know your fellow badminton buddies. If you have suggestions of cheap tasty nearby places, let me know and I can advertise post-practice dinners in the weekly e-mail.
9. Please feel free to send me any feedback, suggestions, comments. Remember to reply to ec1214@med.nyu.edu (and don’t just click reply, as that will send your message to the list-serve).
