EON: First Dinner Gathering

Message from Emily: Our First Beyond Badminton Organizer

Emily Chan | First Year Medicine Student | e-mail: ec1214 [at] med.nyu.edu

Hi Everyone! So while heading home after open gym today, I don't know about you, but all that running on the court sure made me hungry! I remember back at Cal, a bunch of us would usually grab dinner after the games (sure we were sweaty and stinky, but we were all hungry too! : ) Well okay, I know New York City isn't grubby old Berkeley, so maybe we can give ourselves some time to change/shower. Anyway, either way, I thought it'd be nice to get to know each other off the court. So send me an e-mail if you are interested and/or if you know of some cheap good places to eat nearby. I'm thinking Sundays are best, because Friday practice is kind of smack in the middle of dinner time and nobody wants to eat a lot before practice and 10pm is a little late for dinner...) but we can discuss more this Friday. Great!

Message from Patty and KaKi

Message from Patty (team member 05)

So how's everything? The other day I went up to Boston and had contact with the president of BU's Badminton Club. He has no problems about having some games with us. So I think we should talk about this someday, probably soon. So we'll discuss the days to visit and some days for them to come as well. That's just my initial thoughts. If anything comes up between now and next time we meet, feel free to email me.

Message to the team

I think it's time to map out this season's tournament in details ASAP.I would like to listen your thoughts and suggestions about our Tournament Schedule in our first practice (9/29/2006).I am thinking of putting all tournaments on Saturdays. Ideas? Come and talk to me.

Team Selection Next Friday

The Team Selection

The first round of team selection will start on Friday (9/15) at 7:00 PM. Please come at least 15 to 20 minutes before, so that we can put you guys into a ladder system. In the event that you can't make it, please email KaKi at info@nyubadminton ASAP. Please look over the list of names below, separated by gender, and make sure that it is correct. The selection method will be to rank the players from the list below by competing in 15-point games until everyone is ranked. If more people become interested in joining the team, we may have to do a second round of ranking placements. The player who will be ranked #1 for each gender will become the captain. The captains will be in charge of managing the weekly practice meets.

Week 1

First, thank you for joining the NYU Badminton Club yesterday. The following questions seemed to be the ones most raised from our members during the first meeting, and I'd try my best to address them here.

How to hold or handle a badminton racquet?

I would actually say, don't worry about it for now. I will show you all individually next week. To me, footwork is much more important than anything else as a beginner. The reason is simple: if you don't have good mobility, it won't matter how well you control the racquet. How can you catch the shuttle if you are not in the right position? Therefore, you should concentrate on the basics of court movement first.

Footwork & Movement

Please see the diagram above. You don't need a racquet for the following practice. Starting from the center and in the ready position, move to the four corners of the court in succession, returning to the center position after getting to each. Pivot and reach with your dominant arm and leg, and shuffle using a step-close-stepping action with your feet. Cross over only on your backhand side, not your forehand side.

Week 1 Footwork & Movement PDF is available here.

And Footwork & Movement Vdieo too

Where can I get a good racquet?

If you are a beginner or intermediate player, you can go to Paragon Sports. The address is 867 Broadway, New York, NY 10003. It is near Barnes and Noble in Union Square. You should be able to get a racquet for 40 bucks. They carry many different sportwaers too. However, if you are in the team or you are a professional player, I suggest you go to to NYC Badminton Club for all your purchase of equipments, especially for those who need their racquet to be restrung.

I noticed that some of our members do not put on an extra layer of grip on their racquets. It is always a good idea to do so because not only does it give you better control of your racquet, it also prevents your skin from getting hurt from frequent scrapping against the original grip that might be too rigid or hard. Personally, I prefer towel grip, but that requires frequent replacement.
